Informative Facts
Concerning Our Services

Do you have
questions about Ortho-K treatments or services that we offer? |
Below
is a list of some frequently asked questions. Please feel free to call our office if
you need additional information. We are always pleased to assist you.

 |
Is
Orthokeratology a new procedure? |
 |
No. As a matter
of fact, the safety and advantages of corneal molding have been realized by both doctors and patients for over 40 years. These
benefits, however, depend on the doctor's ability to perform an
exacting diagnosis to include precise measurement of the corneal
shape. Modern advances in computer technology and diagnostic
instrumentation have made Orthokeratology a more precise
science. Today's computerized Corneal Topographers, which
precisely measure and map the cornea, as well as major advances in
corneal molding lens design and materials, have dramatically improved
the effectiveness of this procedure.

How
long will it be before I notice results? |
 |
During the initial
stages of the procedure and depending on your particular case, you
will either wear your vision retainers as you would regular contact lenses, or we
may determine that night therapy vision retainers may be more appropriate for
you. Rapid visual improvement normally occurs in the first few
days and weeks. Stabilization procedures then follow over the
next few months. Once your eyes are stabilized, you maintain your
improved eyesight by wearing vision retainers on a part-time basis,
sometimes as little as a few days a week. |

Is
everyone a candidate for Orthokeratology? |
 |
No! While Orthokeratology can help
most individuals, including those with astigmatism, moderately high
myopia and in some cases, even hyperopia (far-sightedness) improve
their vision, the procedure is often most effective for those
prescriptions falling within a specific range. Additional
factors include individual corneal rigidity and shape factors as well
as an ability to wear contact lenses. A thorough consultation
and examination at the Contact Lens Center of Lynbrook using advanced
computerized diagnostic instrumentation can easily determine if
Orthokeratology is right for you. |

|
 |
What
are the advantages of Orthokeratology over Refractive eye surgery? |
 |
Orthokeratology normally costs less than refractive eye surgery;
does not involve post-operative pain; nor does it leave corneal hazing
or scarring as is often the case with surgery. There is no loss
of Bowman's membrane (the tough protective layer just under the outer
corneal surface) and above all, Orthokeratology is reversible.
Surgery is not!
